About Has-Beens

The Has-Beens formed in response to the ever-increasing need for overly-cynical lyrics and painstakingly-developed beats. Jay-Jona Skillz was strumming beautiful melodies and producing some dope, jazz-influenced hip-hop while living in Emeryville, when Statement (known by many alternate aliases, including Buddy) came stumbling through the door in a caffeine/nicotine-induced stupor following the cent of menthol he detected while at a nearby liquor store purchasing some miscellaneous items, each with an incredibly excessive sugar content. Finding quickly the many things they shared in common (including, but not limited to, crocheting and a love of cigarillos), it was not long before the first track was put down. Jay Skillz uses the natural inclination everyone wishes they had to create sounds and Statement kind of just sits there with a pen in hand and a half-blank stare on his face. The Has-Beens hope to bring back some of the intellect, depth and effort that is lacking in most contemporary Hip-Hop while trying to make their way around the flashiness and gun-talk that is polluting Hip-Hop culture. They are also both proponents of hyphenated words/phrases and members of the Coalition for the Elimination of Bad Music.
