The Naughty Spots. Go ahead and laugh. The Angels Camp band intended its name to be funny. "We like to make people laugh," said guitarist Justin Orr, 18. But don't assume the Naughty Spots' music is a joke. The band plays a brand of polished, melodic pop-rock that's rare in the area's punk- and rap-filled music scene. "Pretty much everyone that goes to our shows in (Angels Camp) is our friend," Orr said. "We're just trying to get our music to as many people as possible." The group is working on the follow-up to April's "Shock," a collection of 12 catchy tracks ready for its next album "TRL." Orr's guitar provides the driving melody while drummer Glen Shackley, 20, hammers at a punk pace. The vocals of Andrew Heise, 18, rise clearly above the instruments as he sweetly sings about love and loss. Bassist Drew Bruchs, 17, is the latest addition to the band and worked on two tracks. "Shock" closes with "Reassurance," "Overdue" and "Goodnight My Light," a suite that should be on every local rock fan's best-of list for 2006. It's a soaring seven-minute expression of angst and bereavement worthy of Blink-182. Heise and Orr started the band four years ago in response to a lack of pop-rock in the area. "We were sick of going to shows and not hearing the music we like," Orr said. Heise said they picked the Naughty Spots name because it was funny and memorable.
