About Matinee
Matinee is one of the most visually impressive venues in Stockton. It has a large main room with two-story ceilings and a movie screen that recalls its past as the Stockton Royal theater. It’s probably the only nightspot in town where you can watch a film and enjoy a martini. Despite its size, however, Matinee has an atmosphere that makes it more like a lounge than a cineplex. It’s intimate, hushed and relaxed, with a few tables and low-slung, comfortable chairs. A hardwood bar in the nearby hallway used to be a concessions stand; above it, the marquee reads “shaken not stirred.” Owner Ron Centers noted that he wants to give the area’s more mature crowd a place to hang out. He added that entertainment at Matinee - which includes live music and comedy - is “just something you can chill and have drinks to.”
